Michael A. Battle

After graduating from law school, Mr. Battle worked as an attorney for the Legal Aid Society, N.Y. Civil Division; as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of New York; and then as one of the first three Federal Defenders in the Western District of New York. In 1995, New York State Attorney General Dennis Vacco appointed Mr. Battle Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Buffalo Regional Office, where he supervised a large staff representing the State of New York. In 1996, he was appointed by Governor George Pataki (and was subsequently elected) to the Erie County Family Court bench, where he decided hundreds of family-law cases.
After six years as a judge, Mr. Battle was appointed by President George W. Bush to be the United States Attorney for the Western District of New York. Mr. Battle held that position from 2002 to 2005. During his tenure as United States Attorney, Mr. Battle sat on the Attorney General's Subcommittee on Civil Rights, U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and White Collar Fraud, and also helped create a U.S. task force to prosecute fraud in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In 2005, President Bush promoted Mr. Battle to Director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, where he had administrative oversight of all 93 United States Attorneys and served as liaison between the United States Attorneys and the Justice Department and other federal agencies.
Most recently, Mr. Battle was a partner at the Washington D.C. office of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, where he worked on cases involving hot-button issues such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, health care fraud, False Claims Act cases, and Disadvantaged Business regulatory violations.
Mr. Battle's practice focuses on commercial and civil litigation, as well as white-collar criminal matters. Mr. Battle is admitted to practice in New York and in the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Western District of New York.
Mr. Battle is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Ithaca College.
